Todd Graham Tells Players He’s Leaving Pitt Via Text

December 14, 2011 - 9:56 pm by Ryan Phillips

Arizona State raised more than a few eyebrows on Wednesday afternoon when the school announced that Pittsburgh’s Todd Graham would be its new head football coach. Graham spent a lone year in charge of Pitt’s football program, guiding them to a 6-6 record before high-tailing it on the first train out of town.

While we’re not here to disparage Graham for leaving a job after convincing players to commit the next four years of their lives to him and promising he’d be around. No, we’re here to disparage him for informing those players he broke promises to that he was leaving via a freaking text message.

Graham’s text read as follows:

“I have resigned my position at Pitt in the best interest of my family to pursue the head coaching position at Arizona State.

“Coaching there has always been a dream of ours and we have family there. The timing and circumstances have prohibited from telling you this directly. I now am on my way to Tempe to continue those discussions. God Bless.”

You know Todd, if you had any level of respect for your now former players you would have told Arizona State that you needed to meet with them before leaving. Were you worried that ASU would pull your offer like they did to June Jones?

Seriously man, have some respect for those kids who put their faith and trust in you.

As would be expected, Pitt’s players were not happy, and they lashed out on Twitter.

Here are their responses:

Linebacker Brandon Lindsey: “Fake ppl make me sick.”

Starting quarterback Tino Sunseri: “WOW!”

Backup quarterback Mark Myers: “Can’t believe it!”

Backup quarterback Trey Anderson: “I take a nap for 2 hours, wake up to find out my head coach is gone.” Anderson continued: “yeah there’ll be a new coach. But I have to figure out where I want to go in case I decide to leave.”

Receiver Devin Street: “I’m literally sick.. That man pulled me in his office one on one and lied to me.” He continued: “I feel like dirt and I was just abused. For a year.”

Those kids deserve to be angry. Hope it was worth it Todd.
