Amy Mickelson Has Breast Cancer
May 20, 2009 - 3:18 pm by Ryan PhillipsThere’s sad news coming out of the golf world today as several news sources are now reporting that Phil Mickelson’s wife, Amy, has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Reports are saying that tests are ongoing and treatment will likely begin with “major surgery” within two weeks, according to Mickelson’s management firm. On a side note, Mickelson’s management firm is named Gaylord Sports. Couldn’t come up with anything better than that, guys?
Phil, currently ranked No. 2 in the world, withdrew from the H.P. Byron Nelson Championship in Dallas this weekend, where he was scheduled to begin a two-week run. That stretch was to include a title defense at next week’s Crown Plaza Colonial, where he was the defending champion. He has said he will suspend his playing schedule indefinitely. No word on whether or not he will return for the U.S. Open, which will take place from June 18-21 at Bethpage Black, where Mickelson was the runner-up to Tiger Woods in 2002.
Amy is one of the most visible wives on the PGA Tour, since she’s drop-dead gorgeous and she often walks the entire course following her husband. She often mingles with spectators and is known as one of the most approachable people associated with the Tour. Amy and Phil have done extensive charity work in an around San Diego and having grown up there I know a ton of people well acquainted with the family. I can honestly say I have never heard anyone utter a negative word about either of them.
Amy and Phil met in 1992 when he was a senior at Arizona State University. The Mickelson’s have three children, Amanda, 9; Sophia, 7; and Evan, 6. The family is currently at its home in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
Tiger Woods was quick to issue a very expected and extremely classy statement: “Elin and I are deeply saddened to hear the news about Amy. Our thoughts and prayers are with her, Phil, the children and the entire Mickelson family.”
I’ll go ahead and echo that, saying that our thoughts and prayers are most definitely with Amy and the rest of the Mickelson family. Get well soon.
