Arizona State Pulls Offer To June Jones After He Accepts
December 7, 2011 - 11:56 pm by Ryan PhillipsSMU’s June Jones had accepted an offer to become the head football coach at Arizona State and all that was left were some minor details to be worked out. The deal was essentially done. Then his representatives received a call Wednesday night saying that the offer had been pulled.
Jones’ camp has said that Arizona State’s explanation was that it took too long and the school’s president had decided to move on. A source from Jones’ side of things said, “We had accepted the deal. I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Early on Wednesday the school let it leak that Jones would be announced as its new coach, now SMU president R. Gerald Turner has told The Dallas Morning News that he will instead be back with the Mustangs in 2012.
The Sun Devils have now started and ended talks with Houston’s Kevin Sumlin and agreed to a deal with and pulled it from Jones. Clearly something weird is going on in Tempe. Someone has botched this search from the beginning and things continue to get worse.
Under Jones, SMU finished 7-5 this year while going 5-3 in Conference USA. Apparently he was all set to head west and take over an Arizona State program that Dennis Erickson couldn’t turn around after five seasons. Erickson was dismissed in late November.
Now ASU is back to square one.
