Robert Allenby Wants a Piece of Geoff Ogilvy

Golf can be so vanilla that colorful storylines often get significant attention: Tiger’s fall from grace, John Daly being himself on and off the course for the better part of 25 years, and lately, the character that is Robert Allenby, who witnesses claim wanted to fight fellow Aussie Geoff Ogilvy at the Australian PGA Championship afterparty on Sunday.

Allenby was most recently known as the guy who went 0-4 at the Presidents Cup as one of two captain’s picks by Greg Norman (not to be confused with Stuart Appleby, another Australian golfer, who by all accounts is a good guy). Allenby took a shellacking in the press for his performance. He then blamed his playing partners — one being Geoff Ogilvy — saying “it’s sometimes not all just you, it can be other people hitting you in the shit.”

Geoff Ogilvy passively responded via Twitter during the PGA Championship after Allenby fired 69 and 68 during the first two rounds, sarcastically tweeting “Warms the heart to see Robert playing so well this week.”

The tension came to a head at Hyatt Regency Coolum Resort, site of the championship celebration. Reports claim Allenby sought out Ogilvy, words were exchanged, and then Allenby flew off the handle, screaming “Do you want to go?” Both parties were calmed, and despite more threats, neither man became physically violent.

This isn’t the first time Allenby has caused a ruckus after being embarrassed at the Presidents Cup. In 2009, Allenby made snide remarks about Anthony Kim’s remarkable ability to perform for the American team after staying out late and partying, arriving back at the hotel “sideways.” To be fair, Allenby had just gotten his ass kicked by Kim 5 and 3 during the singles matches. He later apologized to Kim.

Managers for Allenby and Ogilvy played down the incident, saying the two are “good mates” and will remain so.
