All Is Not Fine In Syracuse
November 28, 2011 - 5:12 am by HickeyOh, how I long for the days of UNLV players partying in a hot tub with a shady booster being the biggest scandal in college sports.
Syracuse fired basketball assistant coach Bernie Fine on Sunday when it became undeniably clear that the guy is a serious creep. That was the same day ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” played a recorded telephone conversation from 2002 in which accuser Bobby Davis spoke to Fine’s wife Laurie, who admitted she knew that her husband was molesting Davis.
Unfortunately, molestation has become the new “booster buying a recruit a car” in college sports. We are just weeks removed from the explosive charges filed against former Penn State football assistant Jerry Sandusky — the very charges that emboldened Fine’s accusers to come forward.
Though Orange head coach Jim Boeheim is not implicated in any way in this case, it has at least proven one thing we have always known — the guy is an asshole.
When the story originally broke, Boeheim described the allegations as “a bunch of a thousand lies” and said “the kid behind this is after money. He’s tried before. And now he’s trying again. If he gets this, he’s going to sue the university and Bernie. What do you think is going to happen at Penn State? You know how much money is going to be involved in civil suits? I’d say about $50 million. That’s what this is about. Money.”
Boeheim magically backtracked on Sunday, saying that the university did the right thing by firing Fine and said “What is most important is that this matter be fully investigated and that anyone with information be supported to come forward so that the truth can be found. I deeply regret any statements I made that might have inhibited that from occurring or been insensitive to victims of abuse.”
Too late.
Boeheim put his chips on the table by calling the thing a bunch of lies before it was fully investigated, and displayed precisely the attitude that keeps these types of crimes under wraps for years. He can apologize all he wants, and even if he never realized that his best friend for almost five decades was a supercreep, Boeheim has already proven Abraham Lincoln’s old refrain to be true: It is better to be silent and thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.
(On a sidenote, the pictured logo may be creepier than Bernie Fine. Seriously, I expect it to be standing at the foot of my bed tomorrow morning).

If Boeheim said, “he’s after money, he’s tried it before” isn’t he admitting he knew about these allegations and failed to investigate them to their conclusion or failed to tell the police? Paterno lost his job over the same thing, why is Boeheim still around?
