Sabathia Agrees To New Deal With New York Yankees

The New York Yankees have reportedly agreed to a new deal with left-handed hurler CC Sabathia that will add $30 million to his existing contract. Sabathia had the opportunity to opt out of his deal this offseason and this move ensures that he will be in the Bronx for the near future.

Sabathia had until midnight to opt out of his current pact, which had $92 million remaining over the next four years, as he was scheduled to make $23 million each of the next four seasons. The new deal will add a year to the deal (2016) at $25 million, and gives the Yankees a $25 million option year in 2017, with a $5 million buyout. So basically the Yankees guaranteed Sabathia an extra year and at least an extra $30 million to convince him to stay.

In addition to that, the 2017 year will become guaranteed as long as Sabathia doesn’t end the 2016 season on the disabled list because of a left shoulder injury, does not spend more than 45 days of 2016 on the DL with a left shoulder injury, or does not make six or more relief appearances in 2016 because of shoulder injuries.

The deal includes his current perks of getting a hotel suite on road trips, a no-trade clause and the right to buy game tickets.

Sabathia originally agreed to a seven-year, $161 million deal before the 2009 season. Since that time he has maintained his status as one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. The 31-year-old is 59-23 with a 3.18 ERA as a member of the Yankees during the regular season.

The Yankees had to make this deal because there was a very real chance someone else could have at least matched what the Yankees were willing to give Sabathia.
