Shocking News: Bob Sanders Out For The Year

September 28, 2011 - 4:09 pm by Ryan Phillips

Bob Sanders was supposed to turn around his career and re-establish his reputation this season. As a starter in the San Diego Chargers’ secondary, the safety was looking to prove he wasn’t just an injury waiting to happen. Well, he lasted all of two weeks on the roster.

Sanders was placed on injured reserve by the Chargers today with a knee injury after missing the team’s Week 3 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Man, the dude just can’t catch a break on the injury front.

Over the course of his eight-year NFL career, Sanders has been a beast when healthy. The problem is, he’s almost never been healthy. The Iowa product never played an entire 16 game season, and only played more than six games twice.

In 2005 as a member of the Indianapolis Colts Sanders played in 14 games and made the Pro Bowl and was an All-Pro selection. In 2007 he played 15 games and was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, while also being selected to the Pro Bowl and All-Pro teams.

Since 2007 Sanders has played in just 10 games. That’s 10 games in four years, including missing all of the 2010 season).

Though he’s only 30 years old it’s pretty clear that Sanders’ career is over at this point. He might get another shot on an NFL roster, but this season was his chance to perform on a big stage with a contending team again, and a creaky knee has kept him from doing that.

It really is a sad story, but hopefully Sanders can find a job in coaching or something. The Chargers could certainly have used him this year and were excited at the prospect of having him around. It’s too bad it had to work out this way.
