Javaris Crittenton Arrested In Southern California (UPDATED)

News broke on August 26 that former NBA guard Javaris Crittenton was charged with murder in Atlanta. Since then, Crittenton has been technically on the run. Well tonight Crittenton’s lawyer, Brian Steel, has said his client will turn himself in to police.

Steel says his client will fly from Los Angeles to Atlanta and should arrive early Tuesday. That announcement came just a few hours after the FBI obtained a warrant for Crittenton’s arrest.

Steel told the Associated Press, “He offered to turn himself in. He’s not guilty. We look forward to getting it to the courts.”

Crittenton is wanted in connection with the August 19 shooting death of 22-year-old Jullian Jones. According to police, Jones was walking away with two men when she was shot, and they believe one of the men was the intended target. Jones was a mother of four young children.

Crittenton was the No. 19 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers out of Georgia Tech. He was always a talented player but his off-the-court issues have kept him from a productive NBA career.

He was famously involved in the Washington Wizards locker room gun “incident” with Gilbert Arenas, and was suspended for the rest of the 2010 season. That was one of the most embarrassing incidents the NBA has had to deal with in years and really made the league and fans re-examine how they felt about certain players and the rules governing the locker room.

UPDATE: Crittenton was arrested Monday night at John Wayne Airport in Orange County after checking in to a flight bound for Atlanta. Presumably Crittenton was on his way to Atlanta to turn himself in to police, but instead the FBI arrested him without incident with help from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
