Rafael Soriano Is Doing Just Great

This offseason the New York Yankees gave Rafael Soriano a ridiculous three-year, $35 million contract to be the team’s setup man. So, how’s that working out?

Well, on Tuesday night Soriano landed on the disabled list and is expected to miss another two weeks due to a sore elbow. He first felt soreness in the elbow after back-to-back outings on April 30 and May 1.

So far this season Soriano has been, well, a bit of a disappointment considering he’s hauling in $9 million. In 16 appearances, the 31-year-old righty has finished 15 innings, while surrendering 15 hits, nine runs (all earned) and 11 walks with just 10 strikeouts. He has a 5.40 ERA and a 1.73 WHIP to go along with a 1-1 record and one save.

Just for reference, last season Soriano finished the year with a 1.73 ERA, a 0.80 WHIP and 45 saves in 62.1 innings. He also allowed just 12 runs all year.

Soriano has also blamed the Yankees offense for the team’s problems, and walked out of the clubhouse without talking to the media after blowing a save earlier in the season. Both are completely unprofessional things to do in a clubhouse that prides itself on professionalism.

Oh and did I mention that by signing Soriano the Yankees surrendered their first round pick this year, in one of the deepest drafts in the past 10 years?

It that wasn’t enough, Soriano has already undergone elbow surgery in the past (in 2008) and could be headed that way again.

All this adds up to the fact that Soriano is shaping up to be an all-time bust for the Yankees and we’re only in May of his first season with the team. Everyone knew this was a horrible signing when it happened and it is also public knowledge that Brian Cashman was forced to make the deal with Soriano by Hal Steinbrenner.
