So, Colin How Do You Feel About Buffalo?
March 1, 2011 - 1:11 am by Ryan PhillipsAccording to virtually all reports, Nevada quarterback Colin Kapernick killed it this past weekend at the NFL Combine. So much so that his stock may have jumped by three full rounds.
Before the Combine, many saw Kaepernick as a third, fourth or maybe even a fifth rounder. After this weekend he’s probably elevated himself to a second round grade. And he could be just the guy to solve Buffalo’s woes at the quarterback position.
The Bills have the No. 3 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, and unless they’re in love with Cam Newton, they will likely address other concerns with that pick. Todd McShay currently has the Bills taking Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller to help shore up the team’s leaky defense. They could then snag a guy like Kaepernick in a later round.
This past weekend Kaepernick measured in at 6’5 and 233 pounds. He ran a 4.53 40-yard dash and registered at 59 miles per hour on a radar gun with his throws. Kaepernick’s mph reading was the best at the combine - Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett was second (58 mph) and Auburn’s Cam Newton was third (56) - which means he displayed the strongest arm. He also displayed good accuracy and an all-around ability at the position.
Kaepernick was a prolific college quarterback as passed for more than 10,000 yards and rushed for 4,000. One knock him is that he played in the pistol offense in college, but Newton and Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert both played in spread systems that will leave them needing to adjust to an NFL system.
Kaepernick could be a great fit for a team like the Bills who don’t want to sink the kind of money into a franchise quarterback that they’d have to with a high first-round pick.
If the Bills pass on Newton or Gabbert at No. 3, Kaepernick could be the guy they target.
