Barry Stanton: Today’s A-Hole Of The Day
January 4, 2011 - 4:10 pm by Matthew GleneskCongratulations to Barry Stanton.
And no, I’m not referring to the oldie British rock-n-roller who know tours as a geriatric across Australia. I’m talking about Barry Stanton, the news editor for ESPN.com.
ESPN made public the ballots from its 18 employed Hall of Fame voters. That’s right, ESPN has 18 HOF voters. Impressive. They also employ 67 has-been quarterbacks, 35 concussed linebackers and on occasion a Rumors and Rants contributor. (Bite. Hand. Feeds.)
So why the beef with Stanton?
Because instead of voting for worthy candidates such as Roberto Alomar and Barry Larkin, this jagoff decided to cast a vote for B.J. Surhoff - he of the career .282 average and one All-Star appearance.
Even socialist 1940 presidential candidate Norman Thomas thinks that’s a wasted vote. (He got 27 million less than FDR).
Stanton voted for Jack Morris, Edgar Martinez, and was the lone ESPN voter to give Tino Martinez, Don Mattingly and Surhoff a nod.
It’s jokers like Stanton that keep dude’s numbers below the magical 75% threshold, therefore out of the Hall. Who the hell is Barry Stanton to decide who does or does not get into the Hall of Fame?
Courtesy of a Google search:
In 2002, Stanton resigned from the Westchester Journal News after a Nov. 2 story of a mentally challenged high school football player had “numerous sentences and phrases…were identical or similar to those that first appeared” in an October 31 column by Joe Posnanski of the K.C. Star.”
He should of copied Joe’s Hall of Fame ballot. At least that man knows baseball.
Next year, Stanton plans to cast a vote for Oddibe McDowell and Frank Tanana.

Aren’t all Topps Future Stars guaranteed entrance into the Hall of Fame?

Wow. And Oddibe McDowell reference. I applaud heartily and long for that one, Baker.

What a surprise! A New York based writer votes for the Yankee candidates but doesn’t think a career Gold Glover with almost 3000 hits or a pitcher with the 5th most strikeouts and nearly 300 wins is worthy.Must be a Peter King disciple.

I’ll never forget the time that some joker from the Daily Southtown — I forget his name right now — told me that he didn’t vote for Cal Ripken just to make sure he didn’t get into the Hall unanimously. Some people are fucking idiots with no right to hold that privilege.
