Pat Shurmur The Favorite For Cleveland Browns Job?

January 10, 2011 - 1:23 pm by Ryan Phillips

Like most of you, my first question was “who the hell is Pat Shurmur?” Well, he’s currently the offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams, and he’s also apparently emerging as the favorite for the head coaching job in Cleveland.

The Browns are (reportedly) currently favoring Shurmur over Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey and Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell.

Shurmur is part of Browns president Mike Holmgren’s extended coaching tree, as he worked under current Eagles head coach Andy Reid for almost 10 years. Shurmur was the quarterbacks coach in Philadelphia for seven seasons, and Donovan McNabb earned three of his five Pro Bowl berths during his tenure.

Shurmur just finished his second season as the Rams’ OC and has been praised for his development of rookie Sam Bradford.

While the 45-year-old Shurmur certainly comes with some excellent credentials and Holmgren will certainly favor him because of the ties between the two, this hiring couldn’t possibly sit well with Browns fans.

The people of Cleveland want a big name, they want Jon Gruden. It doesn’t appear as if Gruden is interested in returning to the league this year. Like Bill Cowher, Gruden is probably just waiting for the perfect situation to emerge. Apparently that’s not Cleveland right now.

Possibly as a result of that, several sources are claiming that Shurmur currently holds an almost insurmountable lead in the race for the head gig with the Browns.

We’ll keep you updated.

  2. gruden waiting for perfect job? I don’t think the patriots job will be open any time soon. Steelers job prob locked up for awhile.saints.need I go on. Teams need a coach because they stink. This is grudens perfect job from the man he would be working for to his childhood team growing up and an owner that would throw 7 mill a year at him if needed.if he doesn’t want back in the game then he never will. Big show-you better call the guy
