Once Again, Sidney Crosby Outdoes Ovechkin
April 29, 2010 - 1:20 am by TheRiotFirst, let’s start with a general premise: National Hockey League playoff series are often unpredictable and sometimes just flat out wild.
That doesn’t mean anybody thought the top-seeded Washington Capitals would choke away a 3-1 lead to the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, culminating in a 2-1 loss in Washington on Wednesday.
That’s just not supposed to happen. Ever. Especially when you have the player many people consider to be hockey’s best.
But hey, let’s be serious, at this point Alex Ovechkin is to the Capitals what Patrick Ewing was to the Knicks or Dan Marino was to the Dolphins except not as old…yet.
It’s true that Ovechkin is just 24 years old. He has a lot of time left to win a Stanley Cup. You know who’s younger, better and has already accomplished more? Sidney Crosby. Yep, there it is in black and white. At the tender age of 22 Crosby has been to the finals twice, winning in 2009, and scored the game-winning goal in Canada’s gold medal game against the United States back in February.
For all the bluster about the Crosby-Ovechkin rivalry and how important it is for the NHL, is it really that big a deal if Ovechkin is hockey’s Tracy McGrady? I mean, really?
Let’s not forget Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins are alive and kicking for another Stanley Cup title. They get the Canadiens in the Eastern Conference semis.
Do you really think Crosby is going to lose to an inferior team with home-ice advantage?
We won’t rule it out — the playoffs are crazy, as Caps fans know — but let’s just say Crosby must have a wide grin knowing he gets to play Montreal instead of Washington.
Ovechkin might get to go drive fast and pick up chicks but Crosby can still bring home the important hardware.
And that, friends, is what it’s all about.

Indeed. I am a hardcore Caps fan from the days of Bondra and Kolzig (at least they made it to the finals). Leonsis needs to either get rid of the coach or Ovechkin as they feed off one another. Ovechkin, while arguably a great player, has little discipline and all the ‘mea culpas’ in the world does not mean he really believes it. He is bood universally throughout the NHL and portrays an image I, for one, am not proud of. If they keep Ovechkin, then Washington needs a coach who can make him toe the line or bench him. Lastly, take the “C” away; he’s proven he doesn’t deserve it.
