Unemployment Line For College Coaches Needs To Groh
November 29, 2009 - 9:14 pm by Matthew GleneskUniversity of Virginia head coach Al Groh is now former University of Virginia head coach Al Groh.
Why do I care?
Because Groh’s Cavaliers absolutely destroyed my beloved Indiana Hoosiers 47-7 earlier this season. It was one of UVA’s three wins this year.
It begs the question, if Groh can be fired, than why can’t Indiana’s overmatched head coach Bill Lynch?
The Hoosiers have finished each of the last two years with a 1-7 record in Big Ten play.
Apparently that’s good enough for Indiana’s AD, who came out earlier in the season saying Lynch would undoubtedly be back next year.
Whoopie!
An Indiana-based college coach definitely will be fired this week (see Weis, Charlie), but I want one more.
What’s it say when your season highlight is a 36-33 loss to Michigan at The Big House in which you lost your mind and threw your gum at your own players?
Oh yeah, in case you forgot, that was Michigan’s lone conference win.
Not to mention Indiana lost to Northwestern in a game the Hoosiers were winning 28-3. (They lost 29-28, no lie.)
And for the second year in a row, the Hoosiers were outclassed by bitter rival Purdue, who themselves had a good share of struggles this season.

As an IU alum you would think I would be used to the fact that the IU football program will disappoint me at the end of every season. I enter each season opened minded, looking for the Hoosiers to contend for a bowl and they always fail. It’s time for the program to pony up the dough and find a coach that will put butts it the seats and win some games. Fire Lynch. Hep had this program headed in the right direction and we have now taken a giant step backward. If Cincinnati can be good there is no reason IU cannot contend for the same recruits. Go Hoosiers!

Actually, IU and Cincy did contend for some of the same recruits. The top Hoosier commit this year Jibreel Black (whose brother Larry started for IU on the D-line this year) backed out of his commitment to Indiana and instead chose to go to Cincy.
Though I can’t blame him. On one hand, you have this team that’s undefeated and ranked in the top-5. On the other, you have a team that continually finishes in the ass end of the Big Ten.
At least our offense is fun to watch ON occasion.

Yeah I don’t blame the kid for decommitting and staying in Cincy where he’s from and going to be on a better team. I agree our offense is fun to watch and should stay intact for next season but I would love to have one of Cincy’s QB’s taking the snaps. Chappell is decent but we could do better. Hopefully things will change before we are asked to leave the Big Ten for the MAC.

Yeah, Chappel blows. I can’t see how IU gets any better next year with basically the entire defense graduating. As bad as IU was on defense, just imagine how bad they’ll be when this year’s backups have to start. Yikes!

Plus, we turn wide receivers into corners, kickers into safeties (Troy Grosfield), linebackers into D-linemen and running backs into linebackers. Just god awful.

Jesus, are you guys following the defensive playbook from up north? This sounds eerily familiar.

Ironically, we start playing Notre Dame pretty soon, I think.

I thought Indiana was supposed to play ND my first year there. For some reason, the deal fell through and we picked up Kansas.
