Indiana Has Major Issues With Officiating In Iowa Loss

The Indiana Hoosiers are contacting the Big Ten about the egregious officiating job done during last week’s Iowa/Indiana game in Iowa City. In particular, the Hoosiers have an issue with an overturned touchdown reception in which the original call was made by an official who was in perfect position to see the play occur. The play was reviewed by the replay booth and it was determined receiver Terrance Turner’s foot never touched the ground.

What isn’t clear for those who watched the game is that there is no replay angle that shows Turner’s foot definitely NOT touching the ground. The official on the field who was just a few feet from the play saw his foot touch and signaled a touchdown. Meanwhile, replay officials decided that “not enough evidence to overturn” isn’t a phrase that should be used and that the eyes of an official who had an unblocked view of the action had deceived him.

In short, the system failed Indiana badly. And no amount of gum-throwing from Bill Lynch will make it better.

Honestly, I don’t care if the Big Ten apologizes or not. It doesn’t change the outcome of the game, and it certainly doesn’t eliminate the numerous mistakes Indiana made that helped Iowa come back. But everyone who saw that call knows that it changed the game, so its effect upon Indiana’s psyche is undeniable.

All I’m really saying is the Hoosiers really need to stop leaving the games in the hands of the officials and their opponents. Oh hey there, Wisconsin. Fancy you showing up at exactly the right time.
