Going 5-Hole: The Bruins, Tim Thomas and the 2010 Winter Classic

It kind of sucks for the rest of us, but is there a better time to be a sports fan in the greater Boston metropolitan area?

The Celtics are defending NBA champs. The Patriots missed the playoffs but had yet another solid season, even without Tom Brady. The Red Sox are loading up for another playoff run. And let’s not forget about the resurgent Bruins.

Even through a recent rash of injuries, the Bruins are second in the NHL in points with 68 and are 11 points ahead of second-place Washington in the Eastern Conference. It is among the best stories in the league this year.

How have they done it? Well, a lot of the credit certainly goes to All Star goalie Tim Thomas. Check out the highlight package from last night’s game against Montreal after the jump for a couple reasons why Thomas is so good, including a spectacular save.

Barry Melrose even went so far as to say Boston is the best team in the NHL right now. That’s something with leading goal-scorer Phil Kessel out with mono.

So, last night I’m thinking about all this while watching the Montreal game on Versus and it came to me like a vision: Boston and Montreal playing at Fenway next year on New Year’s Day.

I want to start the bandwagon right now. There are few better rivalries in the sport. It’s an Original Six matchup, you know.

Put those two teams outdoors at Fenway Park and you have a game with every bit the potential for awesomeness that Wrigley Field had this year with the Blackhawks and Red Wings.

Gary Bettman, are you listening?

  2. Ummm… do you really think you are the first to come up with the idea of having the next Winter Classic be a Boston/Montreal tilt at Fenway? Give me a break… that was voiced over a year ago as soon as they announced it would be an annual event and Chicago got this years. Talk about unoriginal…
