Yoenis Cespedes Is A Hot Commodity

You should get to know the name Yoenis Cespedes (who is also listed as Yoennis Cespedes in some places). Cespedes is a center fielder who defected from Cuba this past summer, has become a YouTube sensation and is now talking to several teams.

Cespedes is expected to be granted free agency shortly by Major League Baseball, and the Florida Miami Marlins are considered early favorites to land him.

According to scouts, Cespedes has star potential. He comes in at six-feet, 215 pounds, and is right-handed all the way around. He has considerable power - he broke the Cuban record for home runs with 33 in just 90 games this past season - and claims he is 26 years old…but of course, such claims are always dubious for Latin players.

Cespedes’ representatives are reportedly looking for a deal in the $30 million range, which would be roughly what the Cincinnati Reds gave left-handed fire-baller Aroldis Chapman.

One of Cespedes’ representatives, Adam Katz, has claimed he expects his client to be made available to major league clubs soon.

Marlins owner Jeff Loria is expected to visit with Cespedes later in the week, but he has a long list of suitors. The New York Yankees had the outfielder in for a private workout on Monday, while the Red Sox were present at another workout on Monday. Meanwhile the Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians, Washington Nationals, Toronto Blue Jays, Oakland Athletics and Pittsburgh Pirates are all expected to at least make offers for the Cuban star.

I have no idea where he’ll end up landing, but Cespedes seems to be regarded as an impact player at the big league level. The Marlins seem to be making a big push for the outfielder and it would be a big surprise if they landed him. That said, the Marlins are committed to spending money and improving their roster this winter and adding Cespedes would go a long way towards doing that if scouts are to be believed.
