In what has to be one of the best sports stories in the past few years, former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly was declared cancer-free on Thursday after follow-up biopsies this week came back negative.
On June 3, 2013, Kelly announced that he had been diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in his upper jaw. He underwent surgery on June 7 and shortly after the surgery he announced he was cancer-free. But on March 14 of this year a follow-up test showed that his cancer had returned and he underwent radiation and chemotherapy as a result.
For a long time things did not look good for Kelly and his family. At one point scans in March showed small spots of cancer moving up the nerve leading to his brain. But he has always claimed he would fight it hard and he did, and now as a result, he has won the biggest victory of his life. A victory that his doctor said was “nothing short of a miracle.”
Kelly had this to say about his fight and the people who supported him:
“I am so thankful for the support and prayers of my family, my friends near and far, and everyone in Western New York and throughout the country through my illness. I also want to thank the medical specialists who have done such amazing work. Most of all I want to thank God. Without my faith and God’s constant presence, there would be no such thing as ‘Kelly Tough.'”
Maybe the most heart-warming part of all of this is this video of Kelly calling his daughter to tell her he is cancer free.
