Drew Doughty has developed into one of the NHL’s best defenders, and on Wednesday night during Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, the Los Angeles Kings top d-man showed how great he can be. Despite a bad giveaway in the first period that led directly to a goal for the New York Rangers, Doughty was on fire all night during Game 1. But his best moment was clearly an amazing goal he scored to tie the game 2-2 in the second period.
On the play, Kings forward Justin Williams entered the Rangers zone, then dropped the puck off to Doughty. The 24-year-old then made an unbelievable move by going between his own legs with the puck toward the left side of the ice, then moved in close to New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. With what was essentially a one-on-one opportunity with some traffic to Lundqvist’s left. Doughty pulled up a bit and fired the puck into the net on Lundqvist’s blocker side. The Swedish net-minder got a piece of it, but couldn’t stop the shot.
