Pound-for-pound boxing king Floyd Mayweather Jr. will smash a record for the highest guaranteed fight purse in boxing history when he faces Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. On Wednesday it was revealed that Mayweather’s guarantee for the fight will be a whopping $41.5 million.

The highly anticipated fight with Alvarez could also shatter pay-per-view records (or at least approach them), and Mayweather will certainly see a significant portion of that money too. We have been told that Alvarez is guaranteed around $10 million for the junior middleweight title unification fight.

Mayweather’s fight with Oscar De La Hoya attracted 2.5 million PPV buys, which was the biggest total in boxing history. The fight grossed $132 million in PPV revenue, which is also a record.

The previous high for a guaranteed purse was the $32 million Mayweather made for fighting Miguel Cotto in May of 2012. He then tied that mark this May for his lackluster fight with Robert Guerrero. For 2013 alone, Mayweather’s guaranteed purses will total $73.5 million.

The official fight contract should be filed with the Nevada State Athletic Commission at some point next week, probably the day before the fight.

Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KOs) fighting Mayweather (44-0, 26 KOs) is an intriguing matchup for die-hard and casual boxing fans alike. The 23-year-old Alvarez is seen as possibly the biggest future superstar in the sport, while the 36-year-old Mayweather is lining up several final huge paydays before wrapping up his career.

While Alvarez is more of a brawler who likes to mix things up and get physical, Mayweather is one of the smoothest tacticians in the history of the sport. Aside from their twin undefeated records, their clash in styles should be incredibly fun to watch.

Whatever you think of Mayweather as a person, there is no doubting his immense talent and the astonishing gifts he has in the ring. Alvarez is similarly talented, but is obviously far more raw given his age.
