Phoenix Suns unveil hideous new uniforms

Perhaps the only upside to the Phoenix Suns new uniform design is that no one will be watching them next season to realize how ugly they are.┬áThe team unveiled the new look Thursday night, and it ended up like mama always said — never look directly at the sun.

OK, maybe that’s a little harsh. It’s possible, though not probable, that the Suns new home and road jerseys aren’t horrible. But my ability to judge that has been rendered completely useless by the monstrosity that is their alternate uniform. The third jersey is an all-orange, full-sleeved nightmare that gives the appearance that the corresponding shorts are a pair of orange capri pants.

The purple road uni actually looks decent from the front, but the lack of an outline around the numbers gives the back of the jersey a Gus Macker 3-on-3 team feel.

I don’t disagree with the idea Phoenix needed a uniform change — the team is coming off one of the worst seasons in its history, and some sort of new branding was needed. I just think it’s unfortunate that the Suns have such ugly duds when they previously had some of the best in league history.

I always liked the Tom Chambers-era design with its unique Westernized font and sunburst on the side of the shorts.

But the design the team switched to when Charles Barkley came to town also worked in a “this totally fits for the ’90s/signing the league’s most brash player” kind of way.

The new design seems to be an homage to the “ball of sun” on the front of those jerseys. It just happened to look better the old way.

  2. Totally agree. And the home and alternates look like they have no purple.
