In one of the most bizarre sports stories in decades, eccentric NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman has become close friends with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un over the past few months. Now Rodman has reportedly lashed out at American President Barack Obama for not engaging North Korea diplomatically.
Rodman has been trying to reach out to Kim Jong Un to release Kenneth Bae, a Korean-American who was sentenced to 15 years hard labor in North Korea last week. Apparently Rodman believes he’s just picking up the slack for Obama.
On Friday TMZ reported that Rodman said the following about Obama and the North Korean situation:
“We got a black president (who) can’t even go talk to (Kim). Obama can’t do s–t. I don’t know why he won’t talk to him.”
Well Dennis, our president won’t go talk to the brutal dictator of North Korea because we haven’t actually had formal diplomatic relations with his country since the Korean War. The United States has instead relied on other countries to directly negotiate with the government in Pyongyang.
For some reason Rodman sees himself as a diplomat who can actually fix North Korea’s relationship with the rest of the world. Sadly, I think we’re pretty far past that point. But if he wants to do that, he should actually educate himself on the real situation between North Korea and the United States before popping off.
But, again, this is Dennis Rodman we’re talking about, so we shouldn’t expect him to do that.
