Jets may turn to Norv Turner at OC

Last season, Rex Ryan made fun of Norv Turner’s inability to win a Super Bowl in San Diego. Now he may have to turn to Turner to revive his fading hopes of winning one with the Jets.

While Tony Sparano is technically still employed as New York’s offensive coordinator, it seems pretty obvious that he’s on his way out the door after presiding over one of the most inept attacks in the NFL.

According to multiple reports, the top name on Rex Ryan’s list to replace him is deposed Chargers head coach Norv Turner. While New York tabloids will probably have a field day at the possibility of a Norv and Rex Show, it’s not a bad idea — the reason Turner keeps getting undeserved head coaching jobs is because he is so good at being an offensive mastermind.

However, it would be a pretty surprising move considering what the two had to say about each other just a year ago.

Turner was hired by the Chargers over Ryan when they fired Marty Schottenheimer after a 13-3 season, and Rex couldn’t help but bring that up when the Jets and Bolts met last season.

“I think I would have had a couple of rings. I’m telling you, those teams were loaded. There’s no question about it,” was Ryan’s reply when asked what would have happened if the Chargers hired him instead.

Though it wasn’t meant as a slight — just typical Rex Ryan bravado — it was certainly taken that way. Ryan called Turner to apologize, but not before Norval got in a counter-jab.

“I hadn’t seen his quote and I was a little bit surprised by the call, and after I saw the quote I didn’t have the chance to ask him this, but I was wondering if he had those rings with the ones he’s guaranteed the last couple of years,” was Norv’s tart response.

Of course, this is a rather mild disagreement by Ryan family standards — father Buddy Ryan infamously punched out offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride while both worked for the Oilers. And when the Jets and Chargers met this season, both coaches laughed and admitted they were over it. So we see no reason why the Jets shouldn’t add another ring to the NFL’s premier circus.

  2. if we get norv for our OC then all we need is 4 new wide outs, a tightend that can stay healthy and two ruuning backs that don’t run like there in a tar pit OH did i mention a QB and at least 3 new lineman. The Jets are in a world of crap and I believe we are in for few lean years.

  3. Buddy Ryan didn’t “punch out” Kevin Gilbride, the stupid old fool took a swing at him during a sideline dispute. During a game. Yes, during a game! He never touched Gilbride or barely grazed him. Gilbride would have broke him in half, but to his everlasting credit, stayed professional.
