That sound you’re hearing is Les Miles stroking out from laughing at Arkansas offering him the head football coach position. According to reports, the Razorbacks are offering Miles, currently running something of a juggernaut at LSU, five years for $27.5 million, so at least they’re serious in their quixotic efforts to find a big-name coach for their football program.
Miles currently makes $3.8 million in base pay from LSU and reportedly has quite a few bonus clauses in his contract for various football achievements as well. This means Arkansas’ offer of a little over $5 million per year isn’t all that much of a raise. Hell, it’s just barely Saban money. More like Mack Brown money, in fact. And this to leave one of the top three programs in college football and move to Fayetteville to rebuild a program that only has an outside shot of ever consistently beating the program Miles would be leaving.
Yeah, that’s gonna be a no.
You do have to hand it to Arkansas, though. They’re really trying to make a big score with their next head coach and seem convinced that a big name is enough to turn the team into a top flight program. They’re apparently willing to try to get the guy who beat Nick Saban despite him already having a better job in Arkansas’ division in the SEC. That’s balls, my friend.
A word of advice for Arkansas: there is no way a guy from an already successful program is going to come and rebuild the Razorbacks. They would just be doing what they already did at their current jobs. No head coach is just going to make a lateral move. So think outside the Chris Petersen, Gary Patterson, Les Miles box because those guys aren’t going anywhere.
