Los Angeles Lakers: Dwight Howard fires back at Shaq

October 5, 2012 – 1:09 am by Ryan Phillips

It’s no secret that Shaquille O’Neal is not a fan of Dwight Howard. After years of praising Shaq, Howard has seen O’Neal answer his praise with ridicule. After Shaq’s most recent comments it appears Howard has finally had enough.

Howard grew up idolizing O’Neal and after Shaq made the ridiculous claim that Brooklyn Nets center Brook Lopez was actually better than than the new Los Angeles Lakers post man, the youngster snapped back. While Howard’s actions over the past 18 months have turned me off, I couldn’t help but feel good for him as he stood up for himself.

Howard told reporters the following about Shaq’s latest critique:

“Shaq played the game and he is done. It’s time to move on. He hated the fact that when he played that older guys were talking about him and how he played. Now he’s doing the exact some thing. Just let it go. There’s no sense for him to be talking trash to me. He did his thing in the league. Sit back and relax.

“Your time is up.”

Wow. Damn Dwight, keep preachin’ brother.

Honestly, I’ve never gotten the feeling that Howard was a bad guy, I just thought he made so many bone-headed comments and decisions that he came across as a complete drama queen. But all things considered he seems like a decent guy, who likes to have fun while playing the game.

Shaq will always be an iconic figure. And his personality and fun-loving attitude – along with his dominance on the court – always made him a fan-favorite. It’s no wonder Howard has modeled himself after O’Neal. But stooping down to constantly snipe at a young player is really beneath what Shaq should be doing these days.

O’Neal should be willing to reach out to the younger generation of players the way guys like Bill Russell and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar have done before him. That is the role of the previous generation, not to rip apart the guys following in their footsteps.

Hopefully this beef will get squashed before Shaq’s No. 34 jersey is retired on April 2. But until then, it’s good for Howard that he finally answered back to his idol.

  2. Way to be the better man, Dwight. And come on, Shaq–you’re too respected to be disrespecting others like that, man. Not to mention, even when retired, you’re still expected to carry yourself with sportsmanship–esp. when you’re an icon.

  4. Come on Shaq you are much bigger than that, you were once in Dwight shoes as a young player and you knew what it was like being talked about and being disrespected by veteran players and you are now doing the same thing to a young player who have idolized you for many years, you have left your mark on the NBA and with my team, the Lakers, now sit back and encourage Dwight to be the Lakers next great big man…

  7. This show’s Shaq’s lack of class. Over the course of his playing career he’s never missed a chance to rip players, coaches, or organizations. He got away with it because he always said these things with a wink & a smile. Now he’s paid for his commentary which is so off base & lazy that TNT should fire him.

  8. Shaq is and always will be a BIG A** BABY!! Get the pacy out ur mouth SHAQ and be happy for the young MAN! Like its been said, he was in the same SHOES as Dwight… maybe hes just upset cus he didnt REALLY wanna retire NO WAY!! lol

  9. Unfortunately, Shaq has been publicly bashing Dwight for years. He did it while Dwight was the best big man in the league, while Shaq was still playing. We all are blessed with different things, and while Shaq was blessed with unbelieveable size combined with dexterity, Dwight is blessed with pretty good size, and unbelieveable athletic ability for a man of that size. Dwight will never be the dominant player that Shaq was in his prime, but Shaq needs to stop living in the past, rest on his laurels(w/o talking about them) and leave this young mans name out of his mouth unless he has something good to say. It’s funny, he even criticized Dwight wanting to leave Orlando. Didn’t Shaq leave Orlando and end up with the Lakers? If Shaq had spent this kind of energy practicing free throws, he may have ended up being recognized as the best big man ever to play the game. Stop the hate and the jealousy, Shaq. Everyone who plays basketball starts by being a fan. Go back to being a fan, and do your job properly, and be a fair and honest analyst. BROOK LOPEZ??? If you were starting an NBA franchise and you picked Brook Lopez over Dwight Howard as your center, you might end up as the only exec with a worse win/loss record than Jordan.

  12. If not for being so big and strong, SHAQ wouldnt hAve never made it as long as he did in the league, to me he was an average player at best. he never had the skills that Howard has. he is even more average as a analyst. Never liked him then, dont like him now.

  14. Man, I’ve heard of “taking the high road”, but Dwight’s comments made it sound like he was taking a gondola ride to the top of a mountain. When I read the head line, I thought, “finally, the real Superman is gonna let him have it!” Nope, D-12 is still just the super nice guy who’s basically saying, “Dude… stop it already, it’s over and just drop it.” That’s all?!? Man, what a great guy! I know that people claim that no one wants to get into a word feud with Shaq, but c’mon, that fool ain’t got nothing working up in his head, but self praise! I’d get into it and make him look silly! Way to finally say something back Dwight! And you’re showing everyone that you truly are a nice guy and that that foold Snaq knows that his 4 championships are gonna look like book ends to the 6 or 7 that you’ll put up as a Laker!

  25. I don’t understand the big deal. Shaq is an analyst and he said that he thought one guy was better than the other. It was like Armani Toomer saying he thought Romo, statistically speaking, was a better QB than Eli. It is just an opinion. That is what analyst do, that is their job, to give their opinion. If a player doesn’t like it, so be it but, it is still just an opinion. Everyone needs to keep doing what they are paid to do at this time.

By Smokey on Oct 5, 2012

  26. I have always been and will always be a Shaq fan. He is the best big man ever, free throws or not! I don’t think Wilt, Russel, or Kareem could even come close to stopping a dude with that size and strength. Shaq is the original Superman of the NBA! He learned to get into Dwights’ head by motivating and pretty much saying “prove me wrong”. He did this first by saying Bynum was better, now Lopez? That one is a little too far fetched. I hope this lights a fire and the big four along with Meta win 4 in a row to out do what Shaq and Kobe did when they 3-peated! GO LAKESHOW!

By BennyP on Oct 5, 2012

  27. Dwight’s reputation for being a standup guy is a joke. He whined and cried his way out of Orlando who by the way drafted the ingreat out of HIGH SCHOOL and gambled on his ability to become a good player. The ownership and coaches of Orlando brought Howard along teaching how to put his talents to good use. His thank you was to piss on the Orlando Magic and the city of Orlando. So whatever SuperPUNK has to say is not worth the air he spoke it with.

  28. shaq has always been a selfish indvidual. He wants the spotlight all to himself. Thats why the lakers shipped him out!

  29. Sour grapes Shaq, do you know how ignorant you look dising Dwight. Especially when Dwight idolized you when you were playing. Can’t stand to think there might be someone as good as you playing today? Just shows you can smile all you want, but you are still a mean SOB, no wonder they talk about you behind your back. Grow up baby.

  30. No doubt that Dwight Howard is a talented and a good player at his prime now. I am glad he became a Lakers and will a chance to be one of the greatest center in the Lakers history and the NBA.
The Lakers are the best bet to win the championship this year, provided Dwight, Kobe, Nash,Pau, Metta and Jamison are healthy.

By Genie Regodos on Oct 5, 2012

  31. Shaq is stooping very low. The only thing thing that he and Dwight have in common is neither one of them can shoot free throws. NUFF SAID. Let it rest Shaq.

By greenwave on Oct 5, 2012

  32. Shaq there is time for everything, your time on the court is over! It is now time for Howard to use his tallent to the best of his ability. Therefore, Shaq respect the young brother because he has respect for you.

  33. What is every team’s goal and every player’s goal each and every NBA season? If its not TO WIN THE NBA TITLE, then something is wrong.
In 13 years/seasons of lacing them up and playing the regular season to see who makes the playoffs, Bill Russell won the NBA title 11 times… 11 out of 13. Take any comment about who is the best big man in the league and temper it with this FACT. All players from all eras can ONLY BE JUDGED AGAINST THEIR PEERS….its simple. Apples cannot be compared with bananas…or with pineapples. Bill Russell is THE BEST PLAYER WHO EVER LACED UP A PAIR OF SNEAKERS. I am a die-hard UCLA Alumni and fan…a fan since 1953. I attended with Lou/Kareem. Sure Jordan was great… so was Kareem…and Kobe…and Shaq….and Wilt. Take whichever of them you wish to be #2. The best player was #6 Bill Russell….and I don’t see anyone capable of leading their team to a string of NBA titles as Russell did.

  34. Most of you people commenting dont know a thing about Basketball. Shaq is saying what every analyst has said about Mr. Howard he has no game, either facing the basket or back to it. Eight years into his career Dwight Howard still does not know what to do with a ball except dunk it off a pick and roll. The funny thing is we have this first amendment that lets people speak their minds, Shaq said his thing and Dwight if he were SMART would have let his game talk to see if it has changed and grown, and for you idiots saying that Kareem is gonna make him better like Bynum you are just that and idiot, Kaareem got his hands on Bynum as a blank slate no bad habits nothing formed, now he is in charge of trying to break a man who is considered an allstar lets see how this experiment works, you guys know the old saying “you cant teach an old dog new tricks”.

  37. Shaq has not been a real role model for any young athlete. He hated on Kobe while playing for the Lakers and he just lacks respect for the game of basketball and he has no class. He left Orlando and got a ring when he played for the Lakers. He’s hating on Dwight because he is just damn jealous. Your game is over, what game you did have….. Let the youngsters play and have their way. Surprised Nasty Charles Barkley has not put his two cents in on the hate for Dwight…..

    By lakerfan4life on Oct 5, 2012

  38. Shaq and DH are pretty much the same person. Both rely on brute strength to bully at the basket to lay up or dunk…both have no shooting capabilities what so ever. Difference is DH is superior at defense, while shaq had more of a killer instinct. DH is too soft to have killer instinct. Shaq didn’t really smile on the court like a dumb shit, he attacked the basket like a beast and tore that shit down everytime. if i had to pick…Shaq in his primt would shit on DH. and btw i’m not a fan of shaq, infact i hate the center position, cloggin’ up the middle and bully ball has no place in today’s soft NBA game. Shaq and DH are a dieing breed.

By Bottom boy eric on Oct 5, 2012

  39. I grew up loving Shaq, I liked him when everybody hated him because they said all he could do is dunk. I enjoyed watching him play for all of those years, but now that he’s done, he is hurting his legacy by acting like the child and picking on Dwight. It makes no sense, leave the guy alone Shaq, find another way to get attention because you are embarrassing yourself at this point.
