Say what you will about the merits of Ryan Theriot, but one thing’s indisputable: the guy sure knows how to slide across home plate with a championship on the line.
Theriot scored the World Series-winning run in the top of the 10th inning Sunday night on a Marco Scutaro single, but it’s not exactly the first time he’s won a championship with his ass sliding across home plate.
Back in 2000, Theriot clinched a College World Series title for LSU doing the same thing in the bottom of the ninth against Stanford.
As you can see, the man has a knack for scoring in the clutch that Meat Loaf would surely appreciate. As far as we can tell, this makes him the first player to ever score the winning run in both the College World Series and the World Series. Throw that one into your bar bet booklet.
One more thing: Theriot has now won the World Series every year of his Major League career (2) that he hasn’t been a Chicago Cub. Naturally.
