Arkansas head coach John L. Smith joins Legends Club

I’m not sure what it takes to get in to the Rumors and Rants Legends Club, because I just made it up. The only requirement I can think of is a repeated tendency to make people wonder “Is this guy even real, or some sort of movie character?”

Thus it is with great distinction that I announce the charter member of the Legends Club, Arkansas interim football coach John L. Smith.

Smith, who was already so far off the deep end there isn’t a buoy within 10 miles, added to his legend on Tuesday with a wild-eyed admonishment for those in attendance at his Tuesday press conference to “Smile! SMILE!”

John L. put himself in the running for this recognition long before he got to Fayetteville, however. His legend would not be complete without a re-telling of his antics at Michigan State.

Remember how Woody Hayes got fired for hitting an opposing player? Well, John L. skipped convention and hit himself:

Before he was through in East Lansing, he also provided the best halftime interview ever:

As for a video clip of what Arkansas fans must be thinking this season? It probably goes something like this (NSFW:

  2. I had forgotten about the halftime interview!

So, where does Johnell show up next? Since Butch Davis is all but hired to fill in the upcoming coaching void in Fayetteville.

  3. He’ll just drift from here to there, blowing in the wind. You can’t tie John L. Smith down baby, he’s just not built that way.
