The Houston Astros have lost many, many times this season — 74 to be exact — but I’ll be darned if any of them can match the absolute hilarity of Monday night’s meltdown.
Really words cannot do the thing justice. You’ll just have to watch for yourself, soaking in the wonderment that is the 2012 Astros. But in case you need a teaser to push play on the above video, just know that it involves a bunt, guys running into each other, a throw over the first baseman into right field, then a throw from right field to somewhere over the catcher and presumably into the stands.
It may be the single worst baseball play I’ve ever seen, and that includes a similar play that was the singular highlight of my Little League career. Knowing no one would expect it from the slow guy, I once laid a bunt down the third-base line. The pitcher was the first to get to the ball, chucking it into the right field corner as I hustled my way to third for the only triple of my career, though in reality it was a three-base error. But it even at that 8-year-old level everyone on the defense successfully avoided running into one another.
So congrats, Astros. If nothing else, we’ve got a new fight song for you.
In order to finish .500 this year, Houston has to go 45-7 in its final 52 games. The Astros need to go .500 in their final 52 games (26-26) to finish with 100 losses. Good luck in the American League next year, guys!
