Louis Oosthuizen Double Eagle: Fan Gives Ball Back

April 8, 2012 – 8:28 pm by Ryan Phillips

The ball that was a part of what will surely be one of the most memorable shots in Masters history has been returned. Louis Oosthuizen double-eagled the par-5 2nd hole at Augusta National on Sunday, then pulled the ball from the cup and flipped it underhand into the crowd.

It was the first-ever double eagle on the 575-yard second hole at the Masters, and just the fourth all-time. The shot traveled 253 yards and worked its way into the hole after hitting the front part of the green and rolling all the way in.

The shot took Oosthuizen from a spot in third place at seven-under to first place all by himself at 10-under.

The recipient of Oosthuizen’s toss was Wayne Mitchell, a 59-year-old from New Tripoli, Pa. who was seeing his fifth Masters in person. Obviously that ball could be worth a lot of money to the right person, or even at auction. But Mitchell was quickly greeted by two green-jacketed Augusta National members after he and his wife had left their seats.

The ball reportedly had a red No. 4 on it and the letters “L N J S” on it as well.

Mitchell turned the ball over to the club but neither side divulged what the final arrangement for the deal was. The club likely wanted the ball for itself or to return to Oosthuizen.

Obviously the ball would have had much more value if Oosthuizen had actually won the Masters, but the South African lost in a two-hole playoff to Bubba Watson. Still, I have a feeling we’ll be seeing video of that shot for years in replays.

We tip our collective cap to Mitchell for returning the ball and not making a big deal about keeping it. Well done sir.

  2. Outrageous! What has it got to do with officials of the Augusta club if Oosthuizen chooses to give his ball to a spectator? I know what I would have said to them if I had caught the ball!

  3. Question:
Would or will the agusta officals return the ball to Oosthuizen if he asked for it.
