NBA’s Noche Latina Is Muy Dumb

If you half-ass anything in life, you end up looking like a complete ass.

I’m not sure if that is a line from my dad or one I just made up myself, but there’s no question the NBA has continued making a complete ass of itself over its “Noche Latina” promotion, which is supposed be a tribute but instead comes off as pitifully patronizing to anyone with half a brain.

Last night’s game between “Los Bulls” and “Nueva York” was just the latest example of the asinine promotion, although the Knicks uniforms are the only ones which actually make any sense in the Spanish language.

The other ridiculous uniforms include El Magic, Los Rockets, Los Mavs, Los Spurs, Los Suns, Los Lakers and El Heat.

How about  instead of pretending a word is Spanish by placing a Los or El in front of it, we actually put a Spanish word behind it? Los Toros would look pretty cool in black and red on Derrick Rose’s chest, for instance. But there is no such damn thing as an El Magic.

The NBA would be wise to take a note from baseball, which has done this Spanish thing in the actual language of Spanish with the Brewers “Cerveceros” and the Giants “Gigantes” jerseys. Anything less is just estupido.

  2. Los Spurs is the one that makes me shake my head the most. I don’t know why. You’re right, though, Los Toros would look pretty badass.

SNL did this as a joke. 15 years later, the NBA still doesn’t get it.

  5. I’m glad that I’m not the only one who thinks this way. I find this extremely annoying and it makes the NBA come off as lazy and ignorant, even though it has good intentions. I agree with MJenks on the Los Spurs comment–that’s highly ironic haha
