Gunner Kiel De-Commits From LSU

Five-star recruit Gunner Kiel from Columbus, Indiana has backed out of yet another commitment, this time on a much bigger stage. It is being reported that he did not show up to a meeting for January enrollees at LSU and will commit to Notre Dame. SBNation is reporting that he won’t officially announce it until he is enrolled at Notre Dame this week some time.

This is just the latest in a saga that began with Kiel verbally committing to his home-state Indiana Hoosiers, de-committing after the Hoosiers were a total disaster in Kevin Wilson’s first year, then announcing he was going to LSU a few days after Christmas. It’s been a hell of a winter for the Kiel family too, as Dusty (Gunner’s older brother) left Indiana after three years in the program.

Though Gunner Kiel is a five-star recruit, according to Rivals.com, our own Ryan Phillips has been covering him for two years and has been saying for months how wildly overrated he has become in a weak 2012 class of quarterbacks.

But whether or not Kiel is a good quarterback isn’t terribly important here. I’m pissed he didn’t say with Indiana after committing there to play for Wilson. The Hoosiers could have used a savior-quarterback even if he is overrated.

This latest Kiel drama is just more proof that we should not be hanging on the words of every 17-year-old early high school graduate when they often change their minds. It’s obvious Kiel went to Notre Dame because he thought he might be able to start after a year – or even right away since Tommy Rees was God-awful for the Irish this year. Sitting behind Zach Mettenberger for two years a thousand miles from home in Baton Rouge probably didn’t seem all that fun.

I’m just speculating though, because just a month ago Kiel decided on LSU in the first place and really nothing has changed on either depth chart since then. It’s impossible to tell what changed his mind, and no one should care anyway. I mean other than myopic bloggers with nothing better to do.

But seriously though. Don’t care about this. Stop reading now. Never Google Gunner Kiel’s name again until he is starting for some one. This is insane.

  2. I thought Everett Gholston was our new savior and that we weren’t going to be interested in any quarterbacks this cycle. And by “us”, I mean Notre Dame and the alumni association, which I have never, ever, ever paid dues for. And probably won’t.

Oh, and here. Let me put my shocked face on that Notre Dame has picked up another over-rated quarterback commitment.

  3. Her Loyal Sons says that the Observer is confirming that Kiel is enrolled and in class. *shrugs* So, there you go.

And, I meant Gholson, not Gholston. Really. *shifty-eyed* I know my quarterbacks. Uh…gotta go.

  4. It’s funny, when he committed to IU I was shouted down by all my fellow alumni when I said he was wildly overrated. Watched him about a dozen times in high school, solid high school quarterback, nice arm, OK accuracy, but he’s nothing special. Would be great in the MAC, but basically it’s a weak year for quarterbacks and he ended up highly rated.

A five-star? No way. He’s not like a Matt Barkley or someone like that who could come in and start right away and have some success.

  5. So, Phillips, you’re saying that he’s PERFECT for Notre Dame!
