Heavyweight Alistair Overeem made his UFC debut with a splash on December 30 with a first-round knockout of former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. Apparently Overeem didn’t stop there, as he got into a tussle a few days later and has now been charged with misdemeanor battery in Las Vegas.
According to a citation released by the Clark County District Attorney’s office, the 31-year-old had been drinking when he shoved a woman in the face at Wynn Las Vegas. The incident reportedly occurred early on January 2.
Overeem’s win over Lesnar at UFC 141 earned him a shot at UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos at an undetermined date this year.
No one could blame Overeem if he hadn’t gotten his fill of fighting from his matchup with Lesnar. Clearly the former heavyweight champ wasn’t himself and crumpled to a ball in the corner after just one solid body kick from the 260-pound Overeem. “The Demolition Man” then jumped on Lesnar and pounded him with heavy rights to the chest and face before the fight was stopped. After so much build up, the fight certainly didn’t live up to its billing.
That said, the fact that Overeem is alleged to have shoved a woman is troubling. But he does maintain his innocence and claims he will defend himself in court.
Overeem was not arrested over the incident, and was just summoned to court.
