Tennessee Titans wide receiver Damian Williams was apparently the target of an extortion plot. According to Nashville police, a woman named Shelley Anne David has been charged with one count of extortion after trying to pry $5,000 away from the former USC standout. David had filed a domestic assault complaint against Williams earlier in the month.
A sting operation ensued with the help of the Nashville police. In the presence of detectives Williams called David to arrange a meeting. At the meeting Williams handed over a $5,000 cashier’s check to David and she, in turn, gave him a note saying she would not appear in any court proceedings against him. At that point she was taken into custody.
According to police, David accused Williams of grabbing her by the arms and bruising them when he tried to remove her from a room. At the time she was not sure if she would press charges against him.
Then police discovered that David had sent Williams a text asking for money in exchange for not pressing charges.
Nashville Metro Police spokesman Don Aaron said, “The assault warrant (against Williams) has been canceled by the district attorney’s office given the totality of the circumstances and taking into account Ms. David’s credibility issues.”
Williams was a third-round pick of the Titans in 2010. He finished his rookie season with 16 catches for 219 yards but is expected to have a much bigger role in Tennessee’s offense in 2011.
