Bowl Preview: Valero Alamo Bowl

(14) Oklahoma State (10-2) vs. Arizona (7-5) (+5)

So OSU and Missouri are both 10-2 and playing in mediocre bowls. The Alamo Bowl is a little better than the Insight Bowl, but this has to be disappointing. At least the Cowboys are getting the respect of being ranked, but playing a crap Pac-10 team just doesn’t strike me as a satisfying end to a season. Plus the Cowboys gagged away a BCS berth to Oklahoma in the last game of the regular season too. That should stick in their craw, whatever that is.

I don’t know if this is the last time we’ll see OSU’s offense look really great since Dana Holgorsen is leaving, but it sure feels that way. He (and the players of course) took that already good offense to the next level and overcame OSU’s defensive deficiencies. This could mean a player exodus from the program to the NFL draft and also a major step back in production next year. Supposedly, Mike Gundy is looking for another Air Raid guy, but who knows how that’ll turn out.

Arizona is just like Iowa, the team they upset earlier this season. Their regular season finished disastrously, and they essentially backed their way into a mediocre bowl. I like the pieces they have, but there are some major momentum questions here.

I say Oklahoma State’s offense puts on one last show before Holgorsen leaves. Arizona should be able to limit them a little more than the Cowboys are used to, but probably not enough to keep up. Expect a close, high-scoring game.

Pick: Oklahoma State
