East Carolina (6-6) vs. Maryland (8-4) (-7.5)
Suddenly this game is Ralph Friedgen’s swan song for Maryland, and it’s not a happy one.
You do have to respect the fact that he made Maryland fire him instead of just retiring or resigning. The guy is in his sixties; this is probably his last head-coaching gig, and it’s his alma mater. There’s nothing in it for him to just quit, especially since his last team went 8-4 with a good shot at 9-4.
As for the actual matchup between these two teams, I doubt many people care. Neither team is very good (Maryland’s record is a sign of them overachieving more than anything).
I do love that Ruffin McNeill brought the Air Raid offense with him from Texas Tech and is running it with success despite having a lot of players who were recruited to play Holtz Ball when Skip Holtz was still there. Maybe that offense really does work for anyone, which I guess explains why the Mike Leach coaching tree has suddenly exploded all over the map with McNeill at ECU, Dana Holgorsen at West Virginia, Sonny Dykes at Louisiana Tech, and Art Briles at Baylor. Not too shabby.
Anyway, there’s little reason to watch this game seriously since Friedgen is on his way out anyway, and ECU is pretty darn mediocre.
