Army (6-6) vs. Southern Methodist (7-6) (-7)
So because TCU is renovating their stadium, SMU gets an extra home game in the post season? Gotta love that. And for the record, the stadium is named after a totally different Gerald Ford than the guy who was president and went to Michigan.
Army is in the same position as Baylor this bowl season. They’re just happy to be in any bowl after a 14 year layoff or something like that. I’m sure they want to beat SMU and everything, but that “just happy to be here” thing is a killer in bowl games.
With all that “good press” from the Pony Exces$ documentary, I’m sure SMU wants to show up and kick ass at their home stadium. You know, to show that they’ve totally recovered from the death penalty and years of awfulness to go one game above .500 and play Army in a bowl.
And no, Army is gaining no advantage from the game being called the Armed Forces Bowl. They’re definitely the worst of the service academies this year, and there are serious questions about how they’re going to stop SMU’s offense. Some of those questions include: “Why didn’t Army get faster players?” and “Hey, shouldn’t future officers in the Army be bigger than that?” I kid. I kid. I’m still picking SMU though, even though I love the triple option.
Pick: Southern Methodist
