Arizona State Linebacker Vontaze Burfict Has Issues

October 6, 2010 – 3:05 pm by Ryan Phillips

Arizona State has one of the nation’s most talented linebackers in sophomore Vontaze Burfict. Problem is, he might also be one of the dumbest players in the country as well.

That stupidity has led Sun Devils coach Dennis Erickson to bench Burfict for the start of the team’s game against Washington this week. Burfict’s penchant for playing dirty and getting inexplicable personal foul penalties has hurt Arizona State far too much this season.

On Saturday, Burfict (No. 7 in the video below) head-butted Oregon State quarterback Ryan Katz after a play was blown dead.

The head-butting came completely out-of-nowhere, and should have gotten Burfict ejected. On top of that, there was a play where Burfict clearly grabbed and pushed the facemask of lineman Grant Johnson, then attempted to choke him without paying any attention to where the ball was.

Then, in two other instances in the same game, Burfict looked to be throwing a punch: sort of here, and definitely here.

There is absolutely no question Burfict is supremely talented, but his on and off-field antics have tons of eyebrows in his short time on the College Football radar.

This is just the latest in a string of dirty plays, late-hits and egregious decisions Burfict has made.

For those who don’t know, Burfict was committed to USC for most of his senior year of high school, but due to serious academic concerns, the Trojans pulled his offer. Pete Carroll and his team reportedly just didn’t see how he could possibly make it in to college or remain eligible once he was there.

It will be interesting to see how long Erickson leaves Burfict on the bench. It will go a long way to show whether he is really upset about the kid’s actions or if he’s just doing it to stop the Pac-10 from suspending his star linebacker.

  2. I wondered why he spurned USC (Any LA School) for AS. Now I know he didn’t. He just wasn’t acce ptable material. I understand he’s a decent player, but those antics are a display of something seriously out of place in his personal life. If he was NOT in College football, can you imagine where he’d be at this very moment? There are just a few choices. This guy needs to seriously grow up and do it fast, before he finds himself outside looking in, then inside looking out. He has this thing about intentionally harming others, without any apparent reasons.
