Jimmy Clausen To Start For Carolina Panthers

Well, we speculated on it last week and now it has come true, Jimmy Clausen will get the start for the Carolina Panthers in Week Three of the NFL season. That whole Matt Moore honeymoon didn’t last long, did it?

Moore was awful again on Sunday, going just 6-for-16, for 125 yards, one touchdown and one interception during Carolina’s 20-7 loss to Tampa Bay. For the season Moore is 20-for-49 for 307 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. That’s good enough (bad enough?) for a 41.8 quarterback rating.

Clausen entered the game in the fourth quarter on Sunday to the cheers of the home crowd. He looked confident in his short stint in the game, but couldn’t lead the Panthers to a score and threw an interception of his own.

It’s interesting that Fox has had such a quick trigger with Moore, considering how long he allowed Jake Delhomme to be terrible before making any kind of move. But at the same time, Fox has to realize that he might be on his last legs with the Panthers and he needs to shake things up to save his job.

I’m not sure if the switch to Clausen – who was the Panthers’ second round pick this year (No. 48 overall) – is the answer, but it’s something.

Moore was clearly not a guy you could hitch your trailer to for the long-term and everyone outside of Carolina already knew that.

All twenty four people left in the stands…

It’s not that I’m a fan of Carolina; I had the game on for background noise and to catch the updates on the Green Bay game. Clausen did look decent enough, I guess. But then, compared to Moore, Brady Quinn would look competent.
