Do Duke Fans Know Why They Are Hated?

March 28, 2010 – 10:16 pm by Ryan Phillips

Most of the nation can’t stand Duke. There’s nothing about the Blue Devils’ basketball program gives the average college basketball fan a reason to smile. They are the hated ones. They are college basketball’s Evil Empire.

As we met Duke fans in Houston this weekend in Houston at the 2010 NCAA South Regional, we began to wonder, “do they even know why people hate their team and fans?”

So we decided to just go right ahead and ask them. The results are below in a video we put together for YardBarker’s Journey to the Tourney project.

Now that they’re back in the Final Four I’m sure the nation will have even more reasons to hate the Dukies.

Special thanks to Champion for sponsoring this project and sending us all sorts of cool Champion gear.

  2. The reason why people hate Duke (if you can believe it…even UNC fans (or so they believe)) is because the refs give Coach K all of the calls. Not as bad as Dean Smith and Roy Williams, but almost as fortunate referee-ing as those two. I hate them both.

  3. I’ve always felt Duke players and their coach, are the biggest complainers about officiating I’ve ever seen. They whine more than any other team which is so ironic, because they seemed to get most of the close calls in their favor. The coup de gras for me, though, was when Henderson almost ended Hansborough’s career with that cheap-shot, low-life intentional hard elbow to his face. It wasn’t even close to a play on the ball. Hansborough was eating Duke alive up until that point and I can just imagine coach K (whose name I can’t spell), telling his players to “do whatever you have to do to stop Hansborough”. Wish I was a fly in the huddle. That pushed me from the dislike, to hate category for Duke.

  4. I think it’s because many, many fans like their best teams to be from Big State U. Duke was a popular team when Coach K 1st got things rolling–the country thought it was cute that a small private school rose up to play with the teams from the University of Whatever. But when the Blue Devils stayed good, the sports fans didn’t like it and began hating us Dookies and seeing conspiracies, etc. MD graduates 8% of its players? Did I read that right? Seems like you could get 10% to graduate just by accident!

  5. Anyone remember Laettner stomping on the chest of the UK player who had fallen in that classic game from ’92? No acknowledgement from Coach K…no class. And definitely the whining and so many calls going their way, especially in Cameron. Hate them as much as I do, I gotta admit Coach K always has his team ready to play and they have intelligent kids who are good athletes…more than can be said for a lot of schools. And Coach K definitely gets more calls his way than Roy.

  6. It is because that jerk Dick Vitale supports them
every year whether they are good or bad. Nobody
    ‘likes “DOOOKIE”!!

  7. Arrogance. You can smell it through the TV. I graduated from Duke. There was a guy who wore a shirt that said, “Get out of my way.” Typical. I made sure my kids didn’t go there.

  8. Wow…Dick Vitale is a jerk? Based on what, exactly? He loves Duke, he loves UNC, frankly he’s an ACC guy.

The arrogance…fine Duke fans are arrogant…so are the fans of all the elite programs….the UNC’s, Michigan State’s, UConn’s, Kentucky’s…etc…etc…

And all those same teams are going to get their fair share of calls from the refs.

Teams with histories of violations and/or low gradudations rates should really be the teams to hate….the Kentucky’s and UConn’s of the world, not the schools who run clean programs with high graduation rates (major props of North Carolina and Duke for doing both)

  9. This is why Duke sucks.

  10. @Phil, saying Coach K doesn’t have class is just way off. No one shows more class in all facets of life than Coach K, in any sport.

The Duke program stands for integrity, and why hate on the players because they are all driven to get a degree at a top 10 university. They don’t recruit one and done’s, or thugs (minus a couple exceptions), and consistently do well every year.

  11. People like myself hate Duke because they are the ultra privileged, snobby, snooty, upper class folk of college hoops. When I look at Duke players and Coach K, I think of spoiled kids from rich parents, instead of thinking about struggling students who survived growing up with hardships to just to get a chance at making it to college.

  12. I live in Durham, so maybe I’m jaded, but I can’t stand UNC more.

But then, I’d take them both over NC State any day of the week.

  13. I hate Duke for a couple reasons-

#1- my college roommate was a diehard Tarheel fan and his distaste of Duke was so strong that it was hard not to admire.
#2- the way that people look at kids that go to Harvard from an academic standpoint, is how people feel about Duke players on the floor
#3- they are super clean- kinda like how Tiger Woods was super clean and then their Lax team has a scandal that is reminiscient of the KKK mixed with some Tiger Woods. No Bueno
#4- Just like people love to hate em, Dick Vitale and the rest of the College Basketball Academia love to praise them. Example- with about 4 minutes to go in the Elite 8 game, the biggest game of Baylor’s existence btw…. The refs called a horrific charge call on a Baylor player that had the baseline entirely open and Zubek slid in there late and moving. Zubek would’ve fouled out and it should’ve been a 3 point play that would have put Baylor up in the game and the pressure would’ve been on the Blue Dicks. But because they’re Duke, they get the call and from that point Baylor is basically done on a change of momentum……yes, it didn’t hurt that Scheyer and Nolan Smith went off from 3

but regardless that charge reminded me of Shane Battier taking charges back in the day when I was drinking beers on my couch in college and just like it did back then, it made me wanna throw up in my mouth.

I probably have more of an issue with the way the CHARGE is referreed in basketball, but anyway

    DUKE BLOWS. period.

  14. these post from Duke fans show you why we hate Duke.. graduation rates? look in 2005 Duke had what 50 percent grad rate? not impressive..the school like all other schools lowers their academic standards for athletes but the fans won;t tell you that..Corey M Carlos Boozer and parents incidents.. ignored by the ncaa.. Coach K is not clean.. he is just not investigated..officiating calls.. and then Coach K going on record to say Smith got all the calls and in 2004 said he didn;t work referees.. he spouts more F bombs than any coach in collge at the;s the over all general hypocrisy and elitism that the coach players and fans ooze at all times..Elton Brand email showed exactly while people hate Duke. Their fans don’t cheer for Duke they make personal attacks on opposing players, and to them it’s funny. to the rest of the nation it’s horrible sportsmanship. The school blindly follows Coach k like he was a Jim Jones cult leader,
