First let’s dispense with the disclaimer: I’m a huge Anthony Kim fan. Love the aggressive nature with which this dude plays golf. He’s a birdie machine when he gets rolling. I do enjoy a decorative belt buckle from time to time as well.
It also helps that we’re in the same age bracket. So to some degree — minus all the stuff about being a really, really talented golfer — I can relate to Kim. There have always been whispers that he likes to party and maybe that’s part of the reason for his incosistencies on the golf course.
Whatever. He’s 24. All of us sometimes go out the night before a long work day. Not all of us get publicly criticized for it.
And not all of us have Robert Allenby comparing us to John Daly after we beat them in a single’s match at the President’s Cup.
Seriously, this is what Allenby said after losing to Kim over the weekend:
“Maybe we should all take the theory of Anthony Kim,” Allenby said, according to Golf Week. “Get home at 4 o’clock [in the morning] and then go shoot 6 under.”
Allenby then went on to call Kim golf’s “current John Daly.” Classy.
First, maybe Allenby should take that theory. Perhaps then he WOULD HAVE WON THE MATCH. Second, both Kim and President’s Cup captain Fred Couples have shot down the idea that Kim spent more time partying than focusing on golf.
So maybe Kim was out partying, maybe he wasn’t. But really, who cares? He played great golf all week. Allenby’s little crybaby session is totally unnecessary. There’s no reason to publicly throw a competitor under the bus like that.
Besides, Kim is 24-years old. He’s barely out of college. This is what people our age do from time to time. Maybe Allenby, at 38, is just too old to remember.
Or maybe he should drink 15 beers the night before his next match.
