Bobby Bowden Isn’t Going Anywhere, Haters

Word out of Florida State today is that Bobby Bowden will not be asked by anyone related to the university to step down from his head coaching position.

You know why? Because the smarter people at FSU figured out that you don’t tempt fate by running your hallowed coach, the face of the program, the only reason that it’s a big deal that FSU sucks anyway, out of town like this. It would be a karmic disaster.

Oh, and Jimbo Fisher isn’t exactly the greatest coach in the world anyway. He’s good, but if he’s been the head coach in waiting for two years now, meaning he’s had a pretty good amount of control over recruiting, where’s the talent? They still don’t have an NFL-level running back, and they haven’t had one for years, or just didn’t use him correctly (Leon Washington). Christian Ponder hasn’t developed under Fisher’s tutelage like he should have at this point. The offense is still turnover-prone and has been the Achilles heel of this “decade of decline” in Tallahassee.

I realize their fans and boosters just want to get back to winning a whole bunch like they used to. But Bowden leaving doesn’t change a thing. It’ll just mean FSU cares more about winning than it does about anyone who contributes to the cause.

Mind you, this is the same school that’s been racked with cheating scandals and voided wins recently. Much of that is Bowden’s fault because he’s the head coach, but this isn’t Bowden’s first rodeo with the NCAA. FSU has always walked that razor’s edge of cheating or not cheating. They were called Free Shoes University back in the day for a reason.

Florida State fans also forget that the ACC is way, way better than it was in the program’s halcyon days. With Miami and Virginia Tech coming over a few years ago and other programs rising up periodically (Georgia Tech, Maryland a few years ago, BC, Wake Forest, hell even Clemson), there is hardly a cupcake to be had on the schedule anymore.

It’s so easy for Seminole fans to fall into the trap of wanting the new guy to assume the reins and guide the program back to ACC and national championship glory. It seems like the old guy is slipping and the unknown commodity of Jimbo Fisher seems like he’s got the stuff to be a great head coach.

But there is no quick fix to this. It’s a different college football world, and while Bowden has kept Florida State from totally modernizing, he’s not even close to the only reason FSU isn’t who they want to be anymore.

So go ahead, run the guy out of town in a blaze of sour grapes and “expectations.” Go ahead. And then enjoy continued mediocrity and random yearly losses to multiple conference opponents and being bitchmade by Florida and sleeping-giant Miami for the forseeable future.

And for the record even dandified USC fans think that F-L-O-R-I-D-A S-T-A-T-E cheer is effeminate.

  2. It’s sad. Bobby looks like some old guy just trying to get a good look at the game. It’s painfully obvious that he’s not doing any in game coaching. And his post game ramblings don’t help any either.

  3. Yeah. They’ve definitely got to get rid of him, but doing it like this is really fucking stupid. Should have let him ride out the season and then quietly figured out a retirement package over the winter/spring.

  4. I think you should ask your students to use “dandified” in a sentence, then publish the results so we can all have a good laugh.

“Hey Coach Bowden, why do you still have a job? Dandified know.”
