The US Senior Open Is In Indianapolis. The PGA Tour Should Be.

Hey everyone! It’s a major golf championship! Just two weeks after the British Open and a week after the Senior British Open! Man, those old golfers don’t waste any time between majors, do they?

It just so happens I got a free ticket to Wednesday’s practice rounds (and free entry into one of the VIP tents) at Crooked Stick Country Club in Carmel, IN. Let me also be clear that this is NOT a preview of the 2009 US Senior Open.

Much like everyone else, I have no idea who the dominant golfers on the Senior Tour are. I just wanted to see a few big names and walk around for a few before enjoying overpriced food in the air conditioned tent. And that’s pretty much what I got.

No one goes to Senior Tour events for the actual competition. Shit, even the players are walking around with their families and like half of them have their grandsons as their caddies. The players were all happy to sign autographs and talk to the galleries as they hit multiple shots from the tees and around the greens. Yeah, sure, the good players really want to win the money and a major championship before they really do have to make a bucket list, but at this point, 95% of these guys have already made their money and this is just for fun.

This is actually my plea for the Indianapolis area to get an honest-to-God PGA Tour event, even if it’s not a major or a hugely important tournament. Watching the blue hairs knock it around such a fantastic course with a huge gallery on a fucking Wednesday is proof we need a legit PGA show around here. Also so I can have something to do in the late summer. Come on, PGA. There’s a shitload of good courses in the greater Indy area, it’s a golf-crazy population, and damned if we’re not at least as good as Milwaukee, Louisville, and Ohio and Michigan, all of whom have at least one PGA event every year. Give me Tiger Woods! Or at least Camilo Villegas!

That said, the golf gods owe Tom Watson this week. The course might be long and tricky, but damned if he hasn’t earned a shot. What’s that? Greg Norman deserves one too? Fuck Greg Norman.

  2. The 1991 PGA Championship was @ Crooked Stick. I’m from Carmel, and went to it when I was 10 years old…it rained the whole freaking time…great course though, you’re right.

  3. You guys can have the GMO, but only if you’re stuck with the same crappy “our tournament is the same week as the British Open” date.

  4. That’d get greater Indy its yearly Paul Goydos sighting. I’m in.

  5. You’re getting your wish. The Western Open (screw you BMW) will be rotating between Cog Hill, Crooked Stick and a course in St. Louis the next several years. I think the next two are at Cog Hill and then Crooked Stick will get it in 2011. So you have your wish. And it’s part of the stupid FedEx Cup playoffs (copying off of NASCAR is easily golf’s greatest mistake) so you’ll have a good field.

  6. Sweet. And they only made the announcement in November of ’07 so I’m right on time with this issue. Now to sit patiently until 2012….
