Red Sox Get Victor Martinez

Just about 50 minutes ago we got confirmation that the Boston Red Sox had acquired catcher Victor Martinez from the Cleveland Indians. Now Yahoo! Sports has jumped in, also reporting the deal as done.

The Red Sox were able to swing the deal without including young starter Clay Buchholz. Yahoo! is reporting that the deal does include pitcher Justin Masterson and prospects Nick Hagadone and Bryan Price instead. That makes it possible that Boston could still try and put a last-second deal together for Roy Halladay, despite how unlikely that is to happen.

Martinez is one of the few brightspots on the year for the Indians, hitting .287 with 15 home runs and 67 RBI. He’ll likely play first base, with Kevin Youkilis moving over to third while Mike Lowell attempts to recover from a back injury. Martinez will also likely head behind the plate to spell Jason Varitek from time to time.

This appears to be a great deal for the Red Sox, as they’re incredibly deep in the starting pitching department and they needed someone capable to fill a first base/catcher role. Plus, adding a bat as capable as Martinez’s never hurts.

For Clevelend, the sell off continues. They add three capable young arms and get rid of a guy who’d be due a hefty raise in 2011.

Earlier in the day the Sox also moved the recently acquired Adam LaRoche to Atlanta in exchange for Casey Kotchman, as Boston feels Kotchman is better suited to a bench role than LaRoche.
