My wife is from a small village near Liege, so I adopted Standard. I’ve still never been to a match, but I’ve been to the stadium, seen them on TV, and I try to follow as best I can on the web (given that I live in LA, it’s not easy to catch games live or otherwise).

I just left Liege, and there are still banners flying for the championship. I don’t think the consequences of the the off-season will hit until they start thinking about next year.

Such is the life in the Jupiler league. It’s an entire league of Montreal Expos, developing players for other teams that can afford the talent.

Could be a tough week for Liege. It looks like Everton is trying to sign their stud midfield ace Steven Defour. Could be the second time in two years the Toffees raid the Belgian champs. They snared the afro-ed Felliani from SL last year.

As (surely) the only Standard Liege fan who regularly reads this site (prove me wrong kids, prove me wrong), I have to say it is a sad day in Liege. But it was inevitable, the team just couldn’t pay him what he deserved.

As an American, I sure as hell hope he PLAYS in Milan, because benchwarming doesn’t exactly promote development (ahem, Altidore, Adu).

Just this: as long as there is no money for US athletes to play soccer at home, there will be very few that make it abroad. There is no lifeguard tending the US soccer gene pool. I remember (literally) bumping into Cobi Jones at a Super Bowl party in SD. He was so small that he went back into the couch like a Gonzo the flying muppet.
