Guess Who’s Coming To Serie A…

US defender Oguchi Onyewu has been signed by AC Milan. I had to read that sentence a few times even after I typed it. Huh, guess that really did happen. He’ll be only the second American to ever play in Serie A (the other was Alexi Lalas, also a defender).

You know Oguchi Onyewu as America’s best defender for the last five years or so and also as the best player on the field for the American side at the Confederations Cup. He was amazing for those two weeks and definitely deserves this jump to major club soccer from the freaking Belgian league, or wherever he was.

Okay sure, when the headline I saw just said “Oguchi signs with Milan,” I had hopes of an American playing for Scudetto-winners Inter Milan and the wonderful Jose Mourinho, but shit, it’s AC fucking Milan. Finally, an American playing for a major club in a major league. Enjoy Milano, Gooch, and do your country proud.

  2. Hopefully Gooch actually gets to play and doesn’t end up rotting on the bench…USA USA USA

  3. Just this: as long as there is no money for US athletes to play soccer at home, there will be very few that make it abroad. There is no lifeguard tending the US soccer gene pool. I remember (literally) bumping into Cobi Jones at a Super Bowl party in SD. He was so small that he went back into the couch like a Gonzo the flying muppet.

  4. As (surely) the only Standard Liege fan who regularly reads this site (prove me wrong kids, prove me wrong), I have to say it is a sad day in Liege. But it was inevitable, the team just couldn’t pay him what he deserved.

As an American, I sure as hell hope he PLAYS in Milan, because benchwarming doesn’t exactly promote development (ahem, Altidore, Adu).

  8. Dr. JwB,

Could be a tough week for Liege. It looks like Everton is trying to sign their stud midfield ace Steven Defour. Could be the second time in two years the Toffees raid the Belgian champs. They snared the afro-ed Felliani from SL last year.

  9. My wife is from a small village near Liege, so I adopted Standard. I’ve still never been to a match, but I’ve been to the stadium, seen them on TV, and I try to follow as best I can on the web (given that I live in LA, it’s not easy to catch games live or otherwise).

I just left Liege, and there are still banners flying for the championship. I don’t think the consequences of the the off-season will hit until they start thinking about next year.

Such is the life in the Jupiler league. It’s an entire league of Montreal Expos, developing players for other teams that can afford the talent.
