Tom Crean’s Tweeting Is A Little Harsh

June 21, 2009 – 10:19 pm by Ryan Phillips

I’ve never been a huge fan of Twitter. I know saying that publicly is good enough to get me struck down by lightning here on the internets. But occasionally the twit-osphere can cause moments of hilarity and this weekend was no exception.

The following appeared on Indiana head basketball coach Tom Crean’s twitter at 12:09 p.m. on Saturday afternoon:

Kevin O Neill to USC. Thats great for him and them. Kevin was in our wedding. There will be some1 that will feel our pain now.

Clearly Crean is a fan on USC’s new head coach, but that last line is a little harsh. We all know Indiana’s basketball program has been suffering because of the mess Kelvin Sampson left behind and Crean has definitely been frustrated by it. But is it me or does he seems a little too happy to have another school sharing the same situation the Hoosiers have endured?

I love Crean. Always have. In fact, I actively campaigned for him to be IU’s head coach after Mike Davis resigned in 2006. I realize that could have just been something he said quickly and without thinking, but it’s pretty lame to remind a guy on the day he’s hired that he’s got a long road ahead of him.

At 12:43 p.m. Crean may have realized his mistake because he followed that up with consecutive tweets:

Kevin will shape that program up. The fans of USC should be happy. The opposing coaches not so much

Then at 12:44 p.m.:

His work ethic is incredible

Kevin O’Neill’s hiring as USC’s new basketball coach is certainly a step in the right direction for the program and apparently Crean totally agrees. He may want to refrain from using his Twitter account to address such situations in the future though. Or, maybe he could ease up on soon-to-be screwed programs.

Just a thought.

  2. Anyone who questions the coach’s tweets isn’t a true fan! Thanks to Urb for showing me the light.

  3. I think you missed Crean’s point, although he wasn’t very clear on that in any event. You need to read a list of his twitter submissions to put this into context. He basically uses them as a stream of conscientious. This is EASILY the most controversial thing he’s ever sent. Having read a bunch of them, I think he was merely letting his buddy know that he could feel his (upcoming) pain. You’re reaching here, and petty criticism like this will probably lead to Crean censoring himself in the future, instead of offering a some GREAT insight-

  4. I think, given that it was preceded by the “[he] was in our wedding” line, he was just making a joke that USC will feel his (Crean’s) pain. As in, “you’re spending the day with my wife? Now you’ll feel my pain.”

  5. Guys, seriously, this post was tongue-in-cheek. I’m not an idiot. Obviously Crean posted that without really thinking how it sounded. I love the guy, he’s great for IU, just thought it came across a little awkwardly.
