Instead we have to suffer through games like Penn State’s 38-33 win at Illinois a few weeks back. Watching two minutes of the first half was enough for me. It was like watching a JV boys high school game. Or maybe worse.
And that was a regular season game.
The Big Ten tournament has a reputation for being even more boring and uninspired than the regular season. It’s a dull grind-fest. Billy Packer might love it, but it’s hard to watch, and he’s gone anyway so who cares what that old curmudgeon thinks?
Usually the Big Ten’s general style translates well to the NCAA tournament. One need only know Michigan State’s track record.
Once again Sparty is probably the only Big Ten team with a legitimate shot of gunning for the Final Four and is the Big Ten tournament’s top seed beginning Thursday.
So, we’ll spend the weekend enduring another boring ass Big Ten tournament.
Really, I hope I’m wrong. I hope it’s exciting and there are some interesting games. Maybe Northwestern makes a deep run or Penn State sews up its NCAA tournament bid with a couple wins.
That would be nice. It would also be nice if a team scored more than 70 points more than once.
Check out last year’s bracket; Exactly one team in one game scored more than 70 points. It was Illinois (on its way to the title game as a 10 seed) against Purdue in the quarterfinals.
The quarters also included No. 1-seed Wisconsin beating Michigan by a 51-34 score. Brutal.
I guess that’s not the ringing endorsement a Big Ten grad should give his conference but…You get what you deserve.
