I’m Pretty Proud of My Dutch Roots Right About Now

March 11, 2009 – 12:08 am by admin

This might be the best day for the Dutch since Henry Hudson sailed into New York harbor.

Well, Dutch Manhattan eventually got taken over by the British. And Hudson wasn’t actually Dutch. And until recently people tended to forget about the Dutch influence on what America became…

…But anyway, the Netherlands advanced to the second round of the World Baseball Classic on Tuesday and knocked out the high-powered Dominican team with a 2-1, 11-inning victory.

This is cause for celebration. I have never been more proud to have Dutch ancestry.

The team from the Netherlands, which beat the Dominicans twice, has almost nobody of whom you’ve heard (perhaps Rick VandenHurk and probably Sidney Ponson) and only 11 players in Major League organizations.

The Dominican team has names like Hanley Ramirez, Carlos Marmol, Miguel Tejada and Jose Reyes. Yeah.

So the Dutch victory is the first major upset in terms of advancing out of the first round in the WBC’s short history. Perhaps people will actually watch it with a little more interest.

Everyone loves an underdog story right? This is March, isn’t it?

Now the Dutch team plays Puerto Rico for seeding before heading off to Miami for the second round.

Glorious. Go Team Netherlands!
