My Boy Jeff Samardzija Gets 1st Shot at Cubs Rotation

While I’ve been trying very hard to ignore all Cubs-related news as spring training has gotten underway, there are certain things that just can’t be avoided.

And here it is: Jeff Samardzija is going to start Chicago’s first Cactus League game Wednesday, thereby giving him the first shot to impress in the battle for the fifth spot in the rotation.

Let’s not get bogged down with what it means for the Cubs rotation and who he’s going up against (Sean Marshall, fellow Domer Aaron Heilman, etc.).

It’s more important that this is great, great news for my Uncle Rico-type story about striking out against Samardzija in high school.

It’s clearly much better to have struck out against a future Major League starter than a middle reliever. That is, unless he became the closer, which would be even better, but with Carlos Marmol and Kevin Gregg in line that’s not going to happen.

So very soon the story could start with, “Let me tell you about the time I faced Major League starter Jeff Samardzija, boy, did he bring the heat…”

Beautiful.
