A Solemn Farewell to the 2009 Arena Football Season

December 10, 2008 – 2:55 pm by TheRiot

Gotta admit, I’ve barely watched a single Arena Football League game in my whole life. But if I wanted to start being a fain as of 2009, well, I’m screwed. It looks like there won’t be an AFL in 2009.

Apparently our fine nation’s crappy economic situation has hit the fringe sports a little harder than everybody else. For shame.

The plan, so it seems, is to get the league’s financial situation in order by canceling the 2009 season and then starting back up in 2010.  That, of course, may be wishful thinking in the economy isn’t going to really bottom out until around that time.

Seriously, if people don’t have jobs are they going to attend AFL games? I’d rather save my money for something resembling a mainstream sports. But hey, that’s just me.

Anyway, this makes me wonder how ESPN is going to fill out that time it would use for AFL games, what with their national broadcast contract. But I don’t really care enough to do any digging on it.

Also, I wonder what Kurt Warner thinks of this national tragedy. We’ll have to get to the bottom of that.

  3. So which is most likely? EA canceled the video game version and the league folds due to lack of interest? Or the league folds and EA cancels the game due to lack of interest?
